An In-Depth Look: INTP

typedistribution

Characteristics of INTP

Composing only 3.3% of the population, INTPs enjoy independent problem-solving, and excel at objectively analyzing a situation in a clear and concise manner. They do not shy away from asking difficult questions, and often challenge themselves and others to find new solutions. These individuals approach almost everything with skepticism, tend to form their own opinions and standards (that are often non-conformist in nature) and apply these standards rigorously to themselves.
While tolerant of a wide range of behaviour, their flexibility often disappears when and if their core values are challenged. They highly value intelligence and competence and others often observe that their INTP counterparts demonstrate mental quickness, insight and intense curiosity about ideas or theories.

Important INTP Contributions INTP

INTPs shine when they are given the opportunity to work independently on a task where the outcome is not clear, or runs counter to the status quo or prevailing way of doing things. Once they have the opportunity to refine their ideas independently, their inquisitive nature can greatly assist in helping teams and groups address the core of complex problems. They are gifted in spotting inconsistencies and illogical thinking and enjoy going beyond the routine to engage in more complex theoretical systems or complicated problems; in doing so, they bring an abundance of energy, intensity and focus.

Some Blind Spots

While INTPs are valuable contributors due to their ability to challenge inconsistencies, others with different type preferences may interpret this behaviour as verbal sparring, arguing or undue criticism. Additionally, because INTPs make assumptions, dislike redundancy, and are objective in nature,  they may be insensitive to others’ needs for more information or personal connection. They may also dismiss their own values and those of others simply because they do not pass the test of ‘logic’, and may fail to understand the impact of their communication or skepticism on others.
