Chesney avoue que le virage culturel a \u00e9t\u00e9 positif, mais il note l\u2019apparition de quelques d\u00e9fis en mati\u00e8re de communication, notamment pour les leaders et les officiers subalternes : \u00ab les leaders appr\u00e9cient la libert\u00e9 de choix, tandis que les officiers fonctionnement mieux dans un syst\u00e8me structur\u00e9 \u00bb dit-il.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab Les gens du milieu des services d\u2019incendie avec lesquels nous travaillons sont, pour la plupart, de types ESFJ, ISFJ et ESTJ \u00bb affirme Helen Jowett. Sa soci\u00e9t\u00e9 d\u2019experts-conseils, McDonald Green, se charge d\u2019administrer les \u00e9valuations de l\u2019Indicateur de types psychologiques <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychometrics.com\/fr\/evaluations\/lindicateur-de-types-psychologiques-myers-briggs\/\">Myers- Briggs<sup>MD<\/sup> (MBTI<sup>MD<\/sup>)<\/a> au cours de programmes de formation de leadership \u00e0 l\u2019intention des services d\u2019incendie \u00e0 Cambridge et dans deux communaut\u00e9s voisines. \u00ab Ils pr\u00e9f\u00e8rent travailler dans un univers uniformis\u00e9 au moyen de proc\u00e9d\u00e9s standardis\u00e9s. Donc, le style de leadership plus mobilisateur est plut\u00f4t per\u00e7u comme \u00e9tant n\u00e9gatif. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>M. Chesney a d\u00fb affronter cette dichotomie au cours de sa carri\u00e8re de leader : \u00ab lorsque j\u2019\u00e9tais sous-chef des op\u00e9rations, j\u2019ai r\u00e9alis\u00e9 qu\u2019on m\u2019adressait moins de r\u00e9criminations si je reformulais des directives sous forme de proc\u00e9dures pas-\u00e0-pas. Les gens veulent plus d\u2019encadrement. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Mme Jowett avoue que l\u2019\u00e9volution des services d\u2019incendie explique cette attitude : \u00ab Il y a moins de lutte contre les incendies en tant que tels; on observe une transition importante vers une reconnaissance proactive, vers l\u2019\u00e9ducation pr\u00e9ventive et des gestes philanthropiques. Les services d\u2019incendie contribuent \u00e0 la communaut\u00e9 de fa\u00e7on inestimable; ils le font simplement de fa\u00e7on diff\u00e9rente. \u00bb M. Chesney est d\u2019accord, et cite un exemple tir\u00e9 de son exp\u00e9rience : \u00ab Lorsque nous proc\u00e9dions \u00e0 un programme d\u2019inspection r\u00e9sidentielle des d\u00e9tecteurs de fum\u00e9e, nous avions du mal \u00e0 proc\u00e9der d\u00fb \u00e0 une absence de gouverne. \u00bb Lorsqu\u2019il a adopt\u00e9 une formule de gestion de projet en communiquant des quotas et des calendriers pr\u00e9cis, le nombre d\u2019inspections a augment\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>M. Chesney juge cependant que ces d\u00e9fis sont l\u2019expression d\u2019une question plus cruciale. \u00ab Il existe deux styles de gestion : l\u2019une est tactique, l\u2019autre strat\u00e9gique. Lors d\u2019urgences, c\u2019est le style de gestion militaire qui pr\u00e9vaut. C\u2019est en utilisant les outils de profilage tel que celui de l\u2019\u00e9valuation MBTI au chapitre de la connaissance de soi que nous aidons les leaders \u00e0 acqu\u00e9rir la souplesse qui les aide \u00e0 passer d\u2019un leadership de commandement et contr\u00f4le \u00e0 un leadership qui se veut plus bienveillant et participatif. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>M. Chesney avoue que l\u2019usage de l\u2019outil MBTI aupr\u00e8s des officiers et des leaders a ouvert le dialogue \u00e0 propos des diff\u00e9rences. \u00ab J\u2019ai \u00e9t\u00e9 surpris de d\u00e9couvrir combien d\u2019officiers tenaient \u00e0 \u00e9changer sur les diff\u00e9rences g\u00e9n\u00e9rationnelles \u00bb, dit-il. \u00ab Ce sont des pompiers exp\u00e9riment\u00e9s, des gens que vous voulez chez vous si votre maison passe au feu. Mais souvent, leurs \u00e9quipes se composent de trois et m\u00eame quatre g\u00e9n\u00e9rations d\u2019une m\u00eame famille de pompiers et la communication peut \u00eatre parfois difficile. L\u2019outil MBTI leur a ouvert les yeux sur la dimension des diff\u00e9rences, et c\u2019est cette approche qui a facilit\u00e9 l\u2019adoption du programme. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 l\u2019\u00e9vidence des r\u00e9sultats, il semble que les gens se sont engag\u00e9s : \u00ab Nous avons not\u00e9 une r\u00e9duction appr\u00e9ciable sur le plan des conflits de personnalit\u00e9s, des diff\u00e9rends au niveau de la direction et des griefs formels d\u00e9pos\u00e9s \u00bb, dit M. Chesney. \u00ab Et il n\u2019y a pas que les officiers qui en ont b\u00e9n\u00e9fici\u00e9; l\u2019avantage a jou\u00e9 dans les deux sens : les leaders s\u00e9niors aussi ont fait preuve de transparence \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9gard de leurs types de personnalit\u00e9. Ainsi, les gens comprennent mieux maintenant de quelle fa\u00e7on ils aiment recevoir l\u2019information qu\u2019on veut leur pr\u00e9senter. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Pour sa part, Mme Jowett affirme que le programme a eu des retomb\u00e9es positives au-del\u00e0 de la caserne de pompiers. \u00ab Un chef de peloton m\u2019a expliqu\u00e9 que l\u2019outil l\u2019a aid\u00e9 \u00e0 mieux comprendre son adolescent aux prises avec un trouble d\u2019hyperactivit\u00e9 avec d\u00e9ficit de l\u2019attention (THADA). \u00bb Elle poursuit en expliquant : \u00ab Ce programme a eu un impact sur la vie personnelle des gens. J\u2019ai la nette impression que nous avons transform\u00e9 ce service d\u2019incendies. \u00bb<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Helen Jowett<\/strong> est PDG de McDonald-Green, une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 d\u2019experts-conseils en ressources humaines qu\u2019elle a fond\u00e9e en 1994. Mme Jowett est conseill\u00e8re en ressources humaines agr\u00e9\u00e9e dans lequel<br \/>\ndomaine elle oeuvre depuis 17 ans. Elle d\u00e9tient une ma\u00eetrise en administration des affaires de Royal Roads University, et elle est repr\u00e9sentante qualifi\u00e9e du programme MBTI.
