How Organizations Use MBTI Insights

Common Questions About the MBTI Assessment

Is the official MBTI from Psychometrics Canada the same as the free personality tests online?

No. Unvalidated online quizzes are often confused with the official MBTI instrument. The official assessment is backed by 70+ years of peer-reviewed research, rigorous scientific validation, and updated norms. Free quizzes do not meet these standards and should not be used for professional development.

Do I need a certification to administer the MBTI?

Generally, yes. The MBTI is classified as a Level B instrument, which means a qualified practitioner must administer and interpret results. Certification is not required for individuals who have a master’s degree in Psychology or a related discipline, but is highly recommended.

Psychometrics Canada offers MBTI Certification Programs throughout the year. This ensures the tool is used ethically and accurately.

How many personality types does the MBTI identify?

The MBTI identifies 16 distinct personality types based on preferences across four dichotomous scales: Extraversion/Introversion, Sensing/Intuition, Thinking/Feeling, and Judging/Perceiving. Each person receives a four-letter type code representing their preferences.

Can the MBTI be used for hiring decisions?

No. The MBTI is designed for development, not selection. The MBTI measures preferences, not ability, therefore it should not be used to screen candidates or make hiring decisions. The tool works best when people feel safe to answer honestly, which requires a development-only context. View our suite of pre-employment assessment tools.

What is the difference between Step I and Step II?

Step I identifies your four-letter personality type and is ideal for introductory workshops. Step II goes deeper, revealing personality facets within each preference. Step II is best when you have more time to debrief/coach participants and is an excellent tool to use when you want to better understand nuances within each preference dichotomy.
